Yankees, Phillies atop MLB odds

The daily betting menu is about to get a lot bigger as the baseball regular season gets started at the end of the week.

The New York Yankees enter the season as the defending World Series champs and they look like the ones to beat again after a little retooling in the offseason. The Yankees added another killer arm to a rotation that already boasted CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Andy Pettitte by brining in Javier Vazquez for his second turn in pinstripes.

In their lineup New York got a lot younger after letting Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui leave; they replaced them with Curtis Granderson and Nick Johnson. Add their bats to Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, and Jorge Posada and it won’t be a surprise to see New York lead the majors in runs for the second straight season.

If you think the Yankees are bound for another World Series title the best place to make a futures bet right now is Diamondsportsbook.com. They’re the only book we’ve found that doesn’t have New York listed as the World Series favorite. The Yankees are listed at +355 right now, while the team they beat in the Series last season are right above them at +325.

The Phillies didn’t make a ton of changes during the offseason, but they did make one huge move in their rotation by basically swapping one Cy Young winner for another - they shipped Cliff Lee to Seattle for former Toronto ace Roy Halladay in a major three-team trade. Halladay looks like a lock for 20 wins as long as he can stay healthy, and he’ll lead a formidable Phillies rotation that also includes Cole Hamels, Joe Blanton, and J.A. Happ. The Phillies’ lineup still looks like a beast at the plate, led by Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Jayson Werth, and Raul Ibanez, so the pitching may not have to be that good to win games.

The oddsmakers may be looking at a World Series rematch, but the Yankees and Phillies have some tough teams standing in their way. In the American League the Red Sox (+600) and Rays (+1400) will challenge the Yankees in the East, while the oddsmakers at Diamond have their eye on Minnesota (+1500) and Seattle (+1500) in the Central and the West.

In the National League the Cardinals are considered contenders at Diamond, currently listed at +950 on the World Series odds. With Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright leading the rotation, and Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday providing plenty of pop in the lineup, the Cards could be worth a couple bucks in case they surprise in October.

The season gets underway Sunday night with the opener between the Yankees and the Red Sox. Look for odds at BetED later in the week.
