World Cup Betting Update
After a wild group stage so far the favorite to win the World Cup has changed over at Bodog.
Before play began in South Africa it was Spain that was the favorite to win the World Cup. But after Spain's shocking loss to Switzerland in its opening match, and Argentina's total domination of its group stage games, it is Argentina that has taken over the top spot on the futures odds at Bodog at 4/1. Spain follows close behind at second on the list at 5/1.
Argentina easily won all three of its group stage matches, flattening Greece, South Korea, and Nigeria by a combined score of 7-1. Maybe even more importantly for Argentina they easily won all three games despite zero goals from their best player, Lionel Messi. If Messi starts finding the net as well Argentina could be headed for their third World Cup title and first since 1986.
Spain entered the tournament as the favorite after getting through qualifying unbeaten. Their unbeaten streak quickly came to a crashing halt with a 1-0 loss to Switzerland. The Spanish bounced back in their next game with a 2-0 win over Honduras, but they're not out of the woods yet. In fact, Spain will likely need a win in their final group stage match against Chile to advance to the knockout stage, as they are currently tied with the Swiss with three points. Spain holds the goal differential over the Swiss, but with Switzerland having what looks like an easy match against Honduras coming up Spain must win, and win big, to ensure they move on.
Another team in danger of missing the knockout stage is defending Cup champion Italy. The Italians have only two points after posting a pair of draws in their first two matches. Italy has fallen to 20/1 underdogs, and their next game against Slovakia has to be seen as a must-win if they want to avoid an early exit.
If you're looking for a dark horse to bet on go with the Netherlands. After wins over Denmark and Japan to open the tournament the Dutch have climbed to 8/1 on the Cup futures at Bodog. With only Cameroon left in the group stage the Dutch are all but guaranteed to win Group E and they could be one team that no one wants to face in the knockout stage.
