WEC 49 Preview

World Extreme Cagefighting makes the trip to Canada this weekend when WEC 49: Varner vs. Shalorus takes place at the Rexall Centre in Edmonton.

The headliner on the WEC fight card is a Lightweight bout between Jamie Varner and Kamal Shalorus.

Varner, the former WEC Lightweight champion, lost his bout the last time he entered the cage at WEC 46 in January. He faced Ben Henderson in his third title defense, but failed to hold on to the title after Henderson forced him to submit to a guillotine choke. The defeat dropped Verner to 16-3 and two no-contests with five wins by knockout and nine by submission.

Shalorus is hoping a win over Varner will give him a WEC Lightweight title shot. No one has ever defeated Shalorus in his still early MMA career, and he owns a 6-0-1 record with four wins by KO. He last fought at WEC 46 as well where he beat Dave Jansen by unanimous decision.

Since WEC is making its first ever trip to Canada they made sure to include some Canadian content on the fight card. There are three fighters in scheduled bouts, including one all-Canadian Featherweight fight between Thamesford’s Mark Hominick and Montreal's Yves Jabouin.

Hominick has gone 4-1 in his last five fights and owns a lifetime 17-8 record with seven wins by KO and seven by submission. Jabouin had a four-fight win streak snapped in his last match, a split decision loss to Rafael Assuncao at WEC 43. He is 14-5 lifetime, with 11 wins by KO.

The other Canadian on the WEC 49 card is London’s Chris Horodecki, who faces American Ed Ratcliff.

Horodecki is 13-2 with six wins by KO, but he lost his last fight at WEC 45 after getting TKOed by Anthony Njokuani. Ratcliff is 1-2 in his last three bouts with both losses coming by submission.
