UFC 129 odds: St-Pierre favored, Hominick an underdog in Canadian-heavy card

UFC 129 gets underway on Saturday in Toronto, Ontario, and Canadian fans have plenty of hometown heroes to bet on. In two championship bouts, SportsInteraction.com has George St-Pierre as a big favorite against Jake Shields, while Mark Hominick is an underdog against Jose Aldo.

Saturday’s event will shatter previous attendance records, with about 55,000 fans present. They’re coming out in droves to watch St-Pierre, a -500 favorite defending his welterweight championship. The French Canadian is in a class of his own, going 21-2 in his career. St-Pierre has won eight consecutive fights, including a unanimous decision over Josh Koscheck in December.

St-Pierre will be facing American Jake Shields. Shields, a +300 underdog at SportsInteraction.com, is no slouch. He has a 26-4-1 record and hasn’t lost since December 2004—a string of 15 consecutive wins. Most of those wins came with Strikeforce and Elite EX; Shields finally made the switch to UFC in October 2010, when he took down Martin Kampmann at UFC 121.

In another championship match, Brazilian Jose Aldo and Canadian Mark Hominick will square off in the first ever featherweight championship fight in UFC history. UFC didn’t have a featherweight division until its merger with World Extreme Cagefighting in 2010; Aldo retained his title and will make his first-ever defense in UFC this weekend.

Aldo (-455 MMA odds this weekend) has enjoyed a dominant career. He’s 18-1 and hasn’t lost since November 2005, winning 11 straight fights since then. Aldo is an absolute beast when it comes to striking, as he has 12 knockout victories to his credit—including seven of his last eight fights.

Hominick (+280 UFC odds this weekend) had a modest 20-8 career record. He’s won five straight fights, though, with knockouts in two of his last three outings. The Ontario native can strike or take a fight to the mat, as he has nine victories via knockout and seven via submission.

Several other Canadians will be in action on Saturday. Rory MacDonald will fight American Nate Diaz on the prelim Spike TV card, while Sean Pierson will face American Jake Ellenberger. The entire prelim card features Canadian vs. American bouts.
