UFC 116 Preview
He's Back. MMA fans and bettors will welcome back Brock Lesnar this weekend, as the behemoth UFC Heavyweight champion finally makes his return to fighting at UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin.
Lesnar hasn't fought since last July due to a ongoing illness that eventually led to surgery. Lesnar was supposed to fight Shane Carwin at UFC 106, but that fight, like a number of other scheduled Lesnar bouts, was scrapped due to Lesnar's health problems.
The last time Lesnar fought was at UFC 100 on July 11, 2009. He faced Frank Mir (the only fighter to beat Lesnar) in a rematch and defeated him by TKO in the second round. That fight unified the titles as Mir was at the time the interim UFC Heavyweight champ.
Lesnar will again be facing the interim UFC Heavyweight champion this weekend when he faces Carwin. Carwin won the interim tag during Lesnar's absence by also defeating Mir at UFC 111. That was Carwin's last victory, which came by TKO in the first round.
After beating Mir, Carwin's MMA record is a perfect 12-0 with seven wins by KO and five by submission. No one has ever gone the distance with Carwin and no one has even gotten past the first round with all of Carwin's fights ending by KO or submission in the opening round.
That streak could end against Lesnar. At Bodog Lesnar is a -145 favorite in the bout and he would likely be more heavily favored if a nearly a year hadn't passed since his last fight. Carwin is a +115 underdog.
There's only one Canadian fighter on the card at UFC 116. Polish Canadian Krzysztof Soszynki will face Stephan Bonnar in a Light Heavyweight bout. The fight is actually a rematch from UFC 110 that ended in controversy.
Soszynski was award the win at UFC 110 by TKO in the third round due to a bad cut on Bonnar. The controversy came from the fact that Bonnar suffered the cut due to a accidental illegal head butt from Soszynski. Both fighters agreed a rematch was needed after the undesirable outcome of their fight at UFC 110.
In the rematch Soszynski is a -250 favorite at Bodog, while Bonnar is a +190 underdog.
