Super Bowl spread sits at field goal
Football bettors have had two weeks to lay down their wagers on Super Bowl XLV. Ever since the odds were posted following the championship games on January 23, action has trickled in with public and sharp money moving the numbers.
Heading into the weekend, most markets are dealing an even field-goal spread on Sunday’s game between the Green Bay Packers (-3) and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
However, for those looking for a discount on the Packers, you can find the Cheeseheads -2.5 at BetUS.com, SportsInteraction.com, and 5Dimes.com. There is also value to be had in hunting for the total.
The over/under has bounced around since opening, moving down from as high as 46 points. Sportsbook.com is currently dealing 44.5, while Bookmaker.com had the total as low as 44 points before action on the over forced a half-point move.
Both teams head into Sunday’s game relatively healthy. Green Bay, which has been plagued by injuries all season, doesn’t have any new faces in the trainers’ room. The Steelers aren’t so lucky.
The AFC champs are still hoping standout rookie center Maurkice Pouncey can play after injuring his ankle versus the Jets in the AFC title game. Pittsburgh also had a number of key players miss practice this week, including safety Troy Polamalu, receiver Emmanuel Sanders, and corner Bryant McFadden. However, Pouncey is the only player expected to be a game-time decision.
Not having Pouncey, who was named to the Pro Bowl in his first year, would be a big hole in the Steelers’ pass protection, and it would also impact the offense’s timing on snap counts. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was off his game with backup center Doug Legursky. The two mistimed a snap which led to a safety in the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship Game.
A safety in Sunday’s Super Bowl would pay a pretty penny for any football fan wagering on props. Bodog.com has a safety priced at +650, with no safety set at a costly -1,200. But this prop holds some value with the injury to Pouncey and the fact that the last time Pittsburgh played in the title game it gave up a safety to the Arizona Cardinals in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLIII.
