Saints vs. Colts: Opening lines for Super Bowl XLIV
The favorite has failed to cover the past two Super Bowls and the Colts will look to end that streak Feb. 7.
Moments after Garrett Hartley nailed the game-winning kick in overtime to earn New Orleans a win over Minnesota, the sports betting world was flooded with lines for Super Bowl XLIV.
Let’s take a look at the early lines, which indicate lots of faith in Peyton Manning and the Colts and some doubt in the Saints, who barely escaped the Bayou with a win.
Super Bowl XLIV – New Orleans Saints vs. Indianapolis Colts
Point spread: -5.5
Moneyline: Colts -205, Saints +175
Total: 56
At Bookmaker.com, Indianapolis opened the week as a 5.5-point favorite over the Saints, while also getting -205 on the moneyline (compared to New Orleans at +175). The Colts earned a 30-17 win over the Jets in the AFC Championship, and it was an impressive victory.
After being largely limited against the Jets for nearly all the first half of the AFC Championship, Peyton Manning figured out New York’s blitz scheme and led the Colts to 24 unanswered points.
The Saints, meanwhile, were lucky to escape with an NFC Championship victory in the eyes of many sportsbooks. Despite winning the turnover battle 5-1, New Orleans was outgained 475 to 257 in yards and needed overtime to put away Minnesota (not to mention a last-minute interception by Brett Favre in regulation time).
With two weeks for bookmakers and NFL betting fans to chew up, digest and spit out the odds, though, all the lines could move a great deal before kickoff arrives.
The total is unsurprisingly high at 56 points at Bookmaker.com. The Saints led the NFL in yardage and scoring this season and, while the Colts’ numbers weren’t quite as impressive, they scored as much as they needed to.
With Peyton Manning at the helm, Indy will keep up if the Saints arrive on game day firing on every cylinder.
The Super Bowl odds had already moved slightly at sharp sportsbook TheGreek.com. The Top 5 rated book had the Colts at -5 as of Monday Jan. 25, with a slightly lower total as well at 55.5.
Recent Super Bowl trends
In terms of recent Super Bowl trends, NFL betting fans should be wary of that high total; in four of the last five Super Bowls, the total has gone under.
The AFC has also enjoyed a very dominant run, winning nine of the last 12 Super Bowls straight up. Bettors have won some paydays with the NFC against the spread, however, as that conference is 7-5 ATS during that stretch.
