Olympic Hockey: United States Outlook

The USA men’s hockey team could be headed for another miracle on ice after finishing the opening round of the Olympic tournament as the No. 1 seed.

If the USA can pull off the Olympic upset they’re a great option for bettors right now at Bodog. Despite the USA’s upset of Canada on Sunday the oddsmakers at Bodog still have the Canadians listed as the gold medal favorite at 9/5. The flashy Russians follow them at 11/4, while the USA has been bumped up to third at 7/2. If the USA keeps winning and gets closer to the gold medal game those are probably the most lucrative odds you’re going to find.

Team USA rolled through the opening round with wins over Switzerland, Norway, and Canada. That earned them the top seed and a bye to the quarterfinals. Against Canada the Americans were considered to be a big underdog, but stellar goaltending by Ryan Miller and two more goals from defenseman Brian Rafalski earned them a 5-3 upset win.

By advancing to the quarterfinals the Americans also get a couple days off to rest up and prepare for their next game. No offense to Switzerland or Belarus, but that game should be a walk in the park. Yes, in the quarterfinals Team USA will face the winner of Switzerland vs. Belarus. The same Swiss team they already beat 3-1 in their tournament opener, or the Belarus team that has only one victory so far (against the winless Germans). Basically, the Americans are all but a lock for the semifinals.

Playing even more into Team USA’s hands is the potential schedule for their biggest gold medal threats, Canada and Russia. By slumping through the opening round Canada has to play a qualifying game on Tuesday versus Germany, which they should easily win. That will be followed by a quarterfinal matchup against Russia the following day. Team USA won’t have to worry about facing both Russia and Canada again down the line because one of them will be bounced in the quarterfinals. Add that to the list of reasons why the USA looks like a great play right now at Bodog at 7/2.
