NASCAR Betting Rundown
With seven races remaining before the Chase begins NASCAR rolls into Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend with Jimmie Johnson the favorite to win everything.
Johnson heads into this weekend's Brickyard 400 as the favorite to claim both another Sprint Cup championship this season and another race win at Indy.
Let's begin with the Sprint Cup odds at Sportsbook.com. Johnson may not be the current leader in the driver standings, but as the reigning three-time Cup champion he's clearly the Cup favorite at +200. Johnson currently sits third in the standings, and considering how he's totally dominated the Chase the last three seasons he'll likely be the Cup favorite as long as he remains in the Top 12.
The driver with the best chance at ending Johnson's championship reign is probably Denny Hamlin. He's tied with Johnson for the series lead in wins this season at five, and at Sportsbook.com he's right behind Johnson on the Sprint Cup futures at +400. Hamlin had a great run during the Chase last season with two wins and six Top-5 finishes, but that was still only good enough for fifth in the final standings. That's what happens when Johnson wins four Chase races and posts seven Top-5 finishes.
The current leader in the driver standings is Kevin Harvick, but the oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com only have him at +900 to win his first championship. Harvick lacks a championship because he's never been able to be consistent in the Chase. The last time he was in the Chase in 2008 he didn't win a single race, and he only cracked the Top 5 once. He'll need a much better performance to knock off Johnson and the rest of the big dogs.
Shifting gears to this weekend's race - the Brickyard 500 at Indianapolis - Johnson leads the race odds as well at +350 after owning Indy the last couple of years. Johnson won back-to-back Brickyard 400 races in 2009 and 2008, and he also took the checkered flag in 2006.
When Johnson hasn't been winning at Indy Tony Stewart has, and he could be a solid underdog pick this weekend. Stewart hasn't made it to victory lane this season, but he won at Indy in 2005 and 2007. Stewart's a +1000 underdog this weekend at Sportsbook.com, and a win at Indianapolis is just what he needs to kick start a mediocre season.
