Lines moving in NFC Championship; steady in AFC

Bookmakers moved their lines a full point this week after early money on the NFC Championship game came in heavy on the underdog Vikings.

Meanwhile in the AFC, balanced action on the Jets and Colts at -7.5 has oddsmakers comfortably raking in action on both sides of that number.

Moneyline: Saints -180, Vikings +160
Total: 53

Faith has totally been restored in the Vikings after they absolutely destroyed the Dallas Cowboys last weekend. According to the numbers at Sportsbook.com, Minnesota is getting 82 percent of the action among moneyline players; the line is currently at +160 for the underdog Vikes.

New Orleans still leads the way on the point spread, though, with 53 percent of the bettors backing the NFC’s No. 1 seed.

Bookmakers reacted this week by moving the point spread from -4.5 points in favour of the Saints to -3.5. It seems to be balancing things out a little bit and, as gameday grows closer, that 53:47 edge New Orleans enjoys should grow even tighter.

One book staying at -4 was bodog, whose head linesmaker said he was happy to offer the half point to underdog bettors because of the action.

"Even though the Saints have dropped from 4.5 to 3.5 favorites at most books, right now we are holding steady at -4 as we are seeing even action on both sides of what is expected to be a high scoring affair," he said Wednesday.

Considering the NFC Championship involves the league’s two highest-scoring teams—their offenses average over a combined 60 points per game this year—it’s no surprise bettors are flocking to “over” on the total. Sportsbook.com is reporting 77 percent of bettors are taking over on NFL totals action.

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts
Point spread: -7.5 Colts
Moneyline: Colts -340, Jets +280
Total: 39

While the Vikings vs. Saints line has moved this week, things remain unchanged in the AFC; Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis are still the favorite by 7.5 points.

Taking the Jets at +7.5 remains tempting enough for NFL betting fans since New York has performed very well over its past 10 games as an underdog. In those games, the Jets are 8-2 both straight up and against the spread.

According to Sportsbook.com’s numbers, public support is completely divided on the moneyline in this one, with the Jets and Colts sharing a 50/50 split. Despite New York’s impressive resume as an underdog, Indy still has an edge in support on the point spread at 57 percent.

While offense seems to be the name of the game in the NFC, defense is taking precedence in the AFC. Although Manning and the high-scoring Colts are involved, bettors are flocking to the under when betting totals—61 percent of NFL totals bettors are going under at Sportsbook.com.

That’s quite indicative of the public’s faith in New York’s defense, which looked spectacular in shutting down the San Diego Chargers last week.
