Heat, Lakers top new NBA Championship odds
Last week was perhaps the wildest in the history of NBA free agency. Now, with most of the dust settled, oddsmakers have readjusted their lines to reflect the new balance of power in basketball. Here’s a look at current NBA Championship odds from Sportsbook.com.
The Miami Heat, to no one’s surprise, have shot to the top of the board with +180 odds. The trio of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh is potentially a dynasty waiting to explode. When James and Bosh took their act to South Beach, many critics argued a championship wasn’t possible—too much money was locked up in the big three, meaning a thin bench would sink the team over a long season or during crunch time.
That notion, however, is quickly being dispelled. Players are jumping at the chance to join this potential juggernaut, even at a discount. Forward Udonis Haslem left money on the table in order to return to Miami, for example. Zydrunaus Ilgauskas, James’ former teammate in Cleveland, will reportedly sign with the Heat as well. Something big is definitely going on in Miami.
The defending champion Los Angeles Lakers are next with +300 odds at Sportsbook.com. There’s little doubt that while all the hoopla was happening in Miami, Kobe Bryant was in a gym somewhere, working hard and plotting how to bring down the new favorites. Los Angeles returns with a stacked roster including Bryant, Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum, Ron Artest and Lamar Odom. There are rumours Bryant is trying to lure Leandro Barbosa to California, which would give the team another scoring option off the bench.
A team that had its fortunes swing the other was the Cleveland Cavaliers. Just a year ago the Cavs were favorites to win it all. Now, with James fleeing town, they’re incredible long shots to win a title at +10000, tied with lowly squads like New Jersey and Minnesota.
