Dynamic Vick forcing himself into MVP consideration
After a lousy start and injury to the Eagles’ Kevin Kolb, Michael Vick found himself in the starting quarterback conversation. Now, after a sensational Monday Night Football performance, BetUS.com is putting him in the MVP conversation.
The fact that Vick has only started and finished four games for Philadelphia (6-3, 4-5 ATS) yet is gaining MVP consideration is a testament to how brilliant he’s been. Vick is 4-0 in those games, averaging 281 passing yards and 55 rushing yards per game while throwing 11 touchdowns, zero interceptions and adding four more scores on the ground.
Sportsbooks have taken notice. Just a week ago, Vick was a 25-1 favorite to win Most Valuable Player at BetUs.com. Then the Monday Nighter against Washington happened. Vick was essentially unstoppable, racking up over 400 yards and six total touchdowns en route to a 59-28 demolition of the Redskins.
Now, BetUS.com has shifted his odds to 5/1, tied with Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers for fifth among MVP candidates. Vick will get another chance to shine in primetime, as the 6-3 Giants come to town for the Sunday night game. The winning team will take over sole possession of the NFC East.
Here’s a quick look at some of the other major contenders for MVP honors at this point in the season, with odds from BetUS.com. As usual, the list is dominated by quarterbacks.
Peyton Manning 2/1
The Colts quarterback already owns four MVP trophies. Just a few weeks ago he looked poised for number five, but he’s cooled considerably, throwing just one touchdown and two interceptions in the past two games. That won’t last.
Aaron Rodgers 2/1
The man who replaced Brett Favre—and his three MVP awards—is chasing his first Most Valuable Player trophy. Rodgers and the Packers have won their past three games, so momentum is on his side.
Eli Manning 3/1
Yes, little brother Eli has joined Peyton in serious MVP consideration. Eli has turned the heat up over the past month or so, throwing 15 touchdowns over his last five games.
Philip Rivers 5/1
Rivers has posted potentially record-breaking numbers despite mindboggling injuries to the offense; if San Diego comes back to win the AFC West, the MVP trophy is probably Rivers’ to lose.
