Canucks on verge of stunning collapse

The Vancouver Canucks head into Game 7 of their Western Conference first round series with the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night on the precipice of blowing what seemed like an insurmountable lead.

The Canucks and Blackhawks are tied at three games apiece in the best-of-seven set, but it’s only because Vancouver lost three straight games to let the defending Stanley Cup champions back in the series. If the Canucks fall on Tuesday at Rogers Arena, they’ll become only the fourth team in NHL history to drop a best-of-seven series after leading 3-0.

Oddsmakers at betED.com have Vancouver as -165 favorites for Game 7, while Chicago is listed as +145 underdogs. The total is set at 5.5.

The Canucks looked the like the team that rolled through the regular season en route to the Presidents’ Trophy in taking the first three games of the series, but the Hawks turned things around by outscoring the Canucks 16-5 in the next three games to even up the set.

Ben Smith netted the winning goal in overtime in Chicago’s 4-3 win over Vancouver in Game 6 on Sunday night at the United Center. Dave Bolland had a goal and an assist for the Hawks, who cashed as -115 chalk.

Cory Schneider started for the Canucks in Game 6 ahead of Roberto Luongo, but he left with an apparent leg injury after allowing the third Chicago goal in the third period. Luongo is expected to start Game 7 for Vancouver.

Over in the Eastern Conference, the Philadelphia Flyers and Buffalo Sabres are set for Game 7 of their first round series on Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center. The Flyers are priced as -160 faves, while the Sabres are on the board as +140 dogs. The total is available at 5.5 at betED.com.

Ville Leino scored the winning marker in the extra frame to lift Philadelphia (+100) past Buffalo 5-4 in Game 6 on Sunday at HSBC Center. The Flyers outshot the Sabres 49-33 on the night, as Daniel Briere potted two goals for the winners.

Derek Roy (thigh) is expected to return to the lineup for Game 7 for Buffalo, although Jason Pominville (leg) and Tim Connolly (upper body) are doubtful. Jeff Carter (knee) remains sidelined for Philly, which is ready to go with Brian Boucher in goal on Tuesday.

Elsewhere in the East, the Boston Bruins are a -110 pick ‘em to close out their series with the Montreal Canadiens (-110) on Tuesday night at Bell Centre. Game 7, if necessary, is scheduled for Wednesday night back at TD Garden.

Bettors handicapping a series comeback by the Canadiens can wager them as +365 underdogs to win the series outright, while the Bruins are -460 faves after winning 2-1 in OT as -170 home chalk in Game 5 on Saturday night.
