Bodog Pushes Cardinals Down Super Bowl Futures List

For a lot of NFL bettors the preseason is a passing thought. The lines are whack, the lineups are unpredictable, and the lack of motivation can drive even the most fun-loving football fan insane.

While the preseason tilts may mean little to some, they have managed to impact the 2010 NFL futures odds. Enough has happened around the league this summer to force the hands of oddsmakers to adjust the numbers for the Super Bowl XLV winner. Here are four teams who watched their odds move over the course of the preseason:

Arizona Cardinals

Without Kurt Warner back under center, the Arizona Cardinals were longshots to make it back to the Super Bowl for a second time in three seasons. The Cardinals were still considered among the class of the NFC West and were neck-and-neck with the San Francisco 49ers went it came to divisional futures.

That was before quarterback Matt Leinart's recent soap opera, which has books and bettors viewing Arizona in a different light. Leinart failed to impress his coaching staff this preseason, losing the starting job to Derek Anderson and airing a tiff with head coach Ken Whisenhunt. The former Heisman winner has been given permission to pursue a trade, putting the Cardinals' passing game in even more jeopardy than before the preseason began.

New York Jets

This was supposed to be the New York Jets' year. After coming off a stellar postseason run, everything was in place for Gang Green to go deeper into the playoffs – perhaps even all the way to Dallas for Super Bowl XLV. Oddsmakers followed suit, pricing New York ahead of the New England Patriots in the AFC East and among the favorites to win the Big Game.

Then, Darrelle Revis decided his services were underpriced. The top shutdown corner in the NFL held out for more money, leaving the Jets' top-ranked defense without its biggest star. On top of that, second-year quarterback Mark Sanchez has yet to wow bettors during the preseason and stinks of a sophomore slump with Week 1's showdown with the Baltimore Ravens just over a week away. That buzz surrounding the J-E-T-S has been muffled by the sound of oddsmakers dropping their odds for 2010.

Jacksonville Jaguars

One of the few bright spots – if not the only bright spot – for the Jacksonville Jaguars this season is running back Maurice Jones-Drew. The cannonball rusher is coming off a career year in which he rumbled for 1,391 yards and 15 touchdowns. Any hope of Jacksonville winning the Super Bowl, let alone making the playoffs, rested on the tree-trunk legs of Jones-Drew.

With the season just on the horizon, the Jaguars aren't sure if their franchise player will be ready to go against the Denver Broncos in Week 1. There have been rumors stirring in Jacksonville that the diminutive back needs knee surgery after missing the past week and a half of action. While the team has denied those reports, Jones-Drew told reporters he has been "taking care of all the nicks and bruises” and expects to be back at practice next week. Even those high hopes aren't enough to stop books from dropping the price on the Jags.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys were the trendy pick to win the Super Bowl this February. The team was coming off a breakthrough playoff showing and had one of the top offenses and defenses in the NFL. The Cowboys even host this year's championship game, giving Dallas more incentive to come through in 2010. That was more than enough for oddsmakers to jack the price up on America's Team.

Those expectations have dimmed a bit during the preseason. The Cowboys were slowed by a rash of injuries on both sides of the ball. Then came the lackluster performance from the first-team offense. Quarterback Tony Romo has passed for just 287 yards, completing only 56.5 percent of his passes and connecting for one touchdown. Dallas' scoring woes and red-zone futility have many NFL futures bettors taking a step back from Big D this preseason.
