Big East Tourney Tips Off

The Big East Tournament tips off on Tuesday with what could be the toughest field of all the conference tournaments on the schedule this week.

The Big East is one of the most talented conferences in college basketball this season, and heading into the tournament they boast five teams in the Top 25, the most of any conference right now. On Sunday that included the No. 1 team in the nation, Syracuse, but that is bound to change after the Orange were upset by Louisville in their regular-season finale.

Despite that loss the Orange still enter the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed. That means they get a quick breather and won’t play their first game until the quarterfinals on Thursday. The other seeds also getting a bye into Thursday’s quarters are No. 2 Pittsburgh, No. 3 West Virginia, and No. 4 Villanova.

While the top seeds wait and see who makes it out of the opening rounds, the tournament begins on Tuesday with four games between the lower seeds. These four contests are South Florida vs. DePaul, Connecticut vs. St. John’s, Seton Hall vs. Providence, and Cincinnati vs. Rutgers.

The Bulls really should have no trouble dispatching the Blue Demons. They faced off just over a week ago on March 2 when South Florida won 63-59 as a 3-point road favorite. The winner of this game moves on to face Georgetown, while whoever comes out on top in that one gets the challenge of facing Syracuse.

The Huskies also appear to have an easy win in their game against the Red Storm. When they met up at Connecticut back in January the Huskies rolled to a 75-59 win as a 9-point favorite. UConn has won nine straight against St. John’s and a win Tuesday would advance them to face Marquette. The winner of the second-round matchup gets slumping Villanova.

The Pirates and Friars should be very familiar with each other considering they met on Saturday. Seton Hall won that game 92-80 as a 1-point road favorite. If Seton Hall can win again they would face Notre Dame in the second round. Whoever wins that one moves on to face Pittsburgh.

The Bearcats will be looking for their fourth straight win over the Scarlet Knights. Back in January Cincinnati defeated Rutgers 65-58 as a 4.5-point road favorite. The winner of Tuesday faces Louisville on Wednesday, and whoever triumphs in that game gets West Virginia on Thursday.
